Onomastruction! The art of name-creating

This world is full of names. And people remember things by “Brand name”
and “Image,” whether it is a company, product, place, or even your own
blog and website.

Rather than just naming your blog with a phrase or simply “XX’s blog”, if you create a good, catchy word with a fitting meaning and use
that as the blog title, people will easily remember and will likely check back to your site.
So, how would you do that?

Look how I just made a word for “making a word”: (Of course, the “making a word” mentioned here is actually creating a
name that has meaning, not some mumbo-jumbo slang l33t language. :P)

Onomastructionn. The act of creating a word by connecting different words and affixes
[prefix ONOMA- (Greek: name; word) + STRUCTION (Latin: to build; to construct, to place together, to arrange) ]

Yes, so making a word isn’t all that hard. You just have to pick out appropriate prefixes, base words and suffixes and combine them to make a word that means what you have in mind.

Tips on onomastructing:

• Use a dictionary. There are a lot of words with cool meanings that you might have never even heard.
• Use a thesaurus. There are many words with same meaning, but sounding way cooler than others.
• Try looking up for Greek and Latin prefixes and suffixes. Names can suddenly sound very sophisticated when ancient root words are used.

Now, as a bonus, examine some of the words and names I have created:

이 세상에는 이름들이 너무나 많다. 그리고 사람들은 여러가지 것들을 그 “이름”과 “이미지”로 기억한다. 블로그나 웹사이트도 마찬가지, 좋은 이름을 지어 주는 것은 대단히 중요하다!

그냥 블로그를 “XX의 블로그” 라고 하거나 “XX의 소소한 일상” 처럼 평범한 문구로 이름짓는 것 보다, 단순하고 창의적이고, 특이하면서 알맞는 뜻까지 있는 단어를 만들어 내서 이름 지은다면 어떨까?

단 한 언어가 아닌 여러 언어를 가지고 생각하면 범위는 끝없이 넓어진다.
요즘 흔히 국내에서 유행하는 동음이의 한자를 이용해 브랜딩하는 것처럼 말이다. 하지만 여기에선 새로운 영어 단어 만들기에 대해서 이야기 하겠다.

자, 이 포스팅의 제목인 “Onomastruction”을 보라. 사전이나 백과사전, 심지어 구글을 검색해봐도 이 단어는 찾을 수 없다. 내가 만들어낸 단어니까!
뜻은 간단하다. “단어 만들기” 라는 뜻이다.

그리스어에서 “낱말, 단어”를 뜻하는 Onoma- 와 “건설, 구성”을 뜻하는 Construction의 -struction 을 합친 단어다.

자, 이렇게 단순히 이미 있는 단어들을 서로 붙혀서 의미하고자하는 단어를 만들어 내면 된다.

“Onomastruct”할때 팁:

• 사전을 사용한다. 새로운 단어를 만들어내지 않아도 사전을 보면 한번도 들어보지 못한 멋있는 뜻을 가진 단어들이 수두룩하다.
• Thesaurus (동의어 반의어 사전)을 사용한다. 같은 뜻을 가지더라도 훨씬 멋있어보이는 단어들이 많이 있다.
• 그리스어나 라틴어로부터 온 접두사(prefix)와 접미사(suffix) 등 어근(root word)를 이용한다. 고대 언어인 라틴어나 그리스어같은 외국어로부터 온 단어들을 이용하면 아주 멋있는 단어를 만들 수 있다.
